Braces are an investment in your long-term dental health and confidence but when a bracket breaks or a wire starts poking unexpectedly, it can be uncomfortable and even alarming. While these issues aren’t usually true emergencies, they can cause irritation or pain that’s hard to ignore. At McCaffrey Orthodontics, we understand how important it is to get relief fast, even if you can’t get into the dental office right away.
In this blog, we’ll walk you through safe, effective DIY fixes for common braces issues, when to seek emergency care, and how our board-certified orthodontist and compassionate team can help you get back on track, comfortably and confidently.
Common Braces Problems You Can Fix at Home (Temporarily)
Until you’re able to see your orthodontist, some simple home care tips can keep you comfortable and prevent further irritation.
1. Poking Wires
A wire sticking out can irritate your cheeks or gums. Here’s what you can do:
- Use Orthodontic Wax: Roll a small piece into a ball and press it over the sharp end of the wire.
- Trim If Needed: If the wire is extremely long and causing pain, use sterilized nail clippers to carefully snip the end (only if you’re confident it’s safe to do so).
- Push Back: Use a clean pencil eraser to gently push the wire flat against your tooth.
Important: Never bend the wire forcefully or remove it entirely—this can make things worse.
2. Broken Brackets
Brackets can break if you bite down on hard or sticky foods, or from an impact to the mouth.
- Secure with Wax: If the bracket is still attached to the wire but moving around, cover it with orthodontic wax to hold it in place and reduce irritation.
- Leave It Alone: Don’t try to glue it back yourself or pull it off. Instead, protect the area and schedule a repair visit with us.
3. Loose Bands or Wires
Bands or archwires can come loose for a variety of reasons.
- Don’t Remove Anything: Unless it’s completely detached and a choking hazard, leave everything in place.
- Apply Wax or Cotton: Use wax or even a small piece of wet cotton to cushion any sharp edges until we can see you.
4. General Discomfort or Sores
If a wire or bracket has caused a sore spot in your mouth:
- Rinse with warm salt water (1 tsp salt per 8 oz of water)
- Apply over-the-counter topical gels
- Stick to soft foods and avoid aggravating the sore area
When to Call for an Emergency Orthodontic Appointment
While most braces issues are manageable at home for a short time, certain situations require prompt attention:
- Severe pain that can’t be managed with wax or OTC pain relievers
- Swelling, bleeding, or signs of infection
- A wire or bracket completely detached and posing a choking risk
- Trauma to the mouth or face causing injury to teeth or braces
If you’re unsure, call us. Our experienced team will walk you through the next steps or fit you in for an emergency visit.
